Folded Horn Illustration
The folded horn is an impedance matching device, which acts essentially as a megaphone. When it is coupled to a speaker driver, the loudspeaker cabinet will be more efficient and will provide greater sound output. But for the horn to be effective, it must be sufficiently large in both length and area.
Response characteristics of a horn loudspeaker are determined by reducing the system to a mathematical model. Specifically, horns having the "classic" Salmon shape - whether catenoidal, conical, exponential or hyperbolic - are modeled using the same Webster equation.
Within the π Folded Horn, the area nearest the speaker driver is quite small and the throat area is equal to the cross section of the speaker diaphram. With an exit or mouth area of 800 sq. inches, the ratio of increase is linear. Total horn length from throat to mouth is 70 inches. These horn parameters provide a simple but efficient design that is easy to use and maintain and is particularly attractive for high powered full-range systems.
